Activities at Msandile River Lodge
Explore the park with one of our specialized guides, learning to spot the signs of the wildlife as you search for the animals and birds. Take a short boat ride across the Luangwa to our vehicles within the park, where our guides will teach you all about the history of the park, the plants and trees and of course the game. South Luangwa is known for its incredible sightings of what we call the Luangwa 5; the elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo's and the wild dogs! Enjoy morning drives with a coffee or tea break as you stretch your legs after watching the sunrise over the bush. Explore the park as the sun goes down and the nocturnal animals start to arise from their slumber ready to hunt, we take a small drink stop just as the sun goes down with a (preordered) sundowner and snack ready to track with the spotlight in the dark!
Game Drives
Msandile River lodge offers activities for all ages, experienced and newcomer safari guests who want to enjoy a real wildlife experience. Please do let your guide know in advance if you have any special interests and we will do our best to accommodate any requests.
South Luangwa National Park is one of Africa’s best kept secrets. The wildlife sightings here are incredible, particularly the elusive leopard. The untouched wilderness has a feeling of authentic Africa, an intrepid search of true bush exploration at just 9,050-sq km the park is wealth of diversity. Here the great legends such as Norman Carr and Robin Pope once pioneered the walking safari in the 1950's and subsequently the level of guiding here is of an excellent quality. The highly trained guides all know the park like the back of their hand, often recounting the lineage of a leopard back to their great grandparents who they met when training. Known for its stunning scenery and density of animals, the location of the park utilizes the Luangwa River as the blood line of the park, which the animals flock to during the drier season.
All accommodation packages include 2 daily game drives. One morning game drive which will start approximately at 06:00am after coffee or tea and a muffin or rusk and the afternoon drive which will leave at approximately 04:00pm after we have spoiled you with our afternoon tea and coffee.
Crossing the river by boat and the natural park boundary, you will embark in one of the specialized open top vehicles through the park. At an added cost you may upgrade to a private vehicle should you not wish to share with other guests. This is an exciting time where you and the guide will explore all that the valley has to offer and hopefully create some everlasting memories of the incredible wildlife here.

Whole Day Safari's
As the golden rays of the morning sun gently kiss the vast African savannah, our day begins with the promise of adventure and the enchantment of the wild. Picture a canvas painted with hues of amber and emerald, where the landscape unfolds like a love story waiting to be written.
Embark on a journey through the heart of nature's masterpiece, where each step is a dance with the untamed beauty that surrounds us. Our safari takes us through diverse landscapes, from open grasslands to dense ebony forests, each revealing a new chapter in the symphony of the wilderness.
Amidst the ebony trees, the majestic impalas gracefully move, seeking refuge from the burgeoning daylight. Their delicate forms blend seamlessly with the dappled sunlight, creating a captivating dance of shadows and grace.
As we enjoy our breakfast, the impalas become silent observers, sharing the space beneath the trees with us in a quiet camaraderie.
In the lofty heights of the ebony trees, a lively troop of baboons entertains us with their playful antics. Mischievous eyes peer through the leaves as the baboons swing effortlessly from branch to branch, their acrobatics adding a touch of whimsy to our morning. Laughter mingles with the rustling leaves as we become part of the vibrant tapestry of life under the emerald canopy.
With the taste of breakfast lingering on our lips, we embark on a thrilling safari adventure in search of the elusive lions, leopards, and the untamed wild dogs. The open savannah awaits, a vast canvas where the drama of the wild unfolds in every rustle of the grass and distant call of the wild.
Guided by the expertise of our seasoned guide, the anticipation builds as we traverse through the golden landscape. The open roof of our safari vehicle offers unobstructed views, allowing us to feel the cool breeze and the warmth of the African sun on our faces.
As the sun reaches its zenith, our journey pauses for a romantic lunch in the heart of the bush. A carefully laid-out feast awaits, surrounded by the natural orchestra of chirping birds and rustling leaves. Together, we create memories as rich and enduring as the landscape that cradles us.
Perched on branches or gliding through the air, the White-fronted Bee-eater adds its melodious calls to the symphony of the bush. Its presence is a testament to the intricate web of life, where each species plays a role in the harmony of the ecosystem.
As the day unfolds, more feathered wonders reveal themselves: the Giant Kingfisher poised by a water source, the Crowned Crane gracefully wading through wetlands, and the majestic Martial Eagle soaring high on thermal currents.
As the sun begins its slow descent behind the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the open plains, we make our way back to Msandile River Lodge. Nestled along the banks of the river, this haven becomes the perfect setting to conclude our day of adventure with a magical sundowner experience while watching elephants crossing the Luangwa River.
